European Film Market & Co-Production Market

Until October 12, experienced producers from around the world may submit feature-length fiction film projects to the Berlinale Co-Production Market 2017. With budgets between one and 20 million euros, the projects should be suitable for international co-production, and have 30% of their financing or at least local production support already in place.

Yet projects will also be given a chance from countries where films have to be produced with, on the average, considerably lower budgets and financing conditions are particularly difficult. Thus this year producers from regions supported by the Berlinale’s World Cinema Fund – Latin America, Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, Southeast Asia and the Caucasus – may submit projects with budgets of at least 750,000 euros. This exception also applies to producers from Greece, Spain, Portugal and Southeast Europe. The idea is to facilitate access to the international market for promising projects from these regions.

Again three promising projects by “Berlinale directors” will also be included in the selection: projects by directors who have previously shown films in the Berlinale programme do not need to have already secured 30% of their financing, and so may start looking for partners at an earlier stage in their development.

By December, roughly 25 feature-length fiction film projects will have been selected from the projects submitted to the Berlinale Co-Production Market. Another ten projects will be presented at the “Talent Project Market” in collaboration with Berlinale Talents.

At the 14th Berlinale Co-Production Market (February 12-14, 2017), the team will again organize over 1,100 one-on-one meetings for the selected projects with potentially interested co-producers, financiers, world sales agents, distributors as well as representatives of TV channels and funding bodies. Participants who are looking for projects to co-produce or finance will be able to apply in November 2016.

Alongside these fiction film projects, a number of international companies without projects in the selection will be introduced within the scope of the company matching programme.

At the “CoPro Series” and “Books at Berlinale” pitching events it will again be possible to discover new drama series and novels with potential for the screen.

The Berlinale Co-Production Market is part of the European Film Market.

Since 2004, over 220 projects that participated in the Berlinale Co-Production Market have been realized.

The main partners of the Berlinale Co-Production Market are the MDM – Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (since 2004) and Creative Europe – MEDIA, a programme of the European Union (since 2005).
