In a world saturated with immersive video games, fast-paced social media, and binge-worthy TV series and blockbusters, it’s tempting to believe that European independent cinema no longer appeals to young audiences. However, the reality is more complex. Across Europe, signs show that young people still care about films – but their ways of engaging with cinema are evolving. While traditional channels may no longer capture their attention, innovative strategies prove that independent cinema can connect with this generation – if it speaks their language.

So, how can independent distributors break through the noise and engage young audiences? What strategies can shift the perception of cinema for those aged 15-25? And how can we overcome the image of cinema being "lost in translation" for youth today? This panel will tackle these pressing questions, exploring diverse strategies and fresh perspectives from across Europe. Speakers from various corners of the film industry will present a toolbox of approaches to engaging with young viewers.

The discussion will draw on recent academic insights into youth cinema habits, provided by Axelle Asmar from Vrije Universiteit Brussel’s Faculty of Studies in Media, Innovation, and Technology (Belgium), along with distribution and marketing expertise from Sophie Stejskal, Filmladen (Austria), Juliette Douhaire, Jour2Fête (France) and Paulina Jaroszewicz, Nowe Horyzonty (Poland). Additionally, David Larkin, Head of Business at Letterboxd, will discuss how the social media platform has become a global hub for young film enthusiasts. The panel will be moderated by consultant and journalist Michael Gubbins (United Kingdom).

Together, they will unpack the complexities of reaching youth, analysing evolving trends and audience habits. With their diverse experiences, they will spotlight practical tools and ideas to ensure European independent cinema stays vibrant, relevant, and engaging for this new generation of film-lovers.

With this offer, the EFM Industry Sessions aim to contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure).
